6DOF-Motors positions

Postby Arno » Sun 30. Mar 2014, 04:10

Hello,

I am building a 6DOF racing simulator.
The motor/gearboxes I got are quite long at 25" from front to back.
I see that all the Stewart platforms typically have the gearboxes towards the center of the simulator, with the motors on the periphery.
Would it be OK to position the motors so that they are all "butt to butt" in a star configuration?
The gearbox outputs would be therefore located on the outside of the base frame.

Is there a rule that shows exactly how the gearbox output levers have to be positioned in relation to each other?
The gearboxes are attached to the seat platform 2 by 2.
Do the motors/gearboxes have to be positioned in a specific manner?
Can they be parallel?
I am thinking about this other design which looks very promising from a member here:
2706

I would simply reverse the motors so that the outputs are towards the outside, instead of the inside.
I notice his motors are parallel to each other, but in the Ckas design, they are not:
2352

Is there a better way to place the motors?
Does it matter?

Thank you!
Arno

Hi Arno,

I asked myself the same questions and finally as I want the most compact design I choose a design which looks like Ckas but more compact .

Below some pics. The upper plateform is on a diameter which has 500mm.

Hello Gilles,
This looks quite cool, and very compact indeed, I like it.
Is the 50cm platform matching the diameter of the circle created by the output shafts?
I created a quick annotation on your pic to illustrate what I mean. :)
2707

I would love to be able to do something compact obviously, but these motors with brakes are over 60cm long each. :o
How long are your motors from the back to output shaft?
This is why I was asking if I could put the shafts on the outside of the perimeter, instead of the inside.
I would basically put the motors back to back, with the output shafts on the outside perimeter.

Hi Arno,

It's quiet ok for the pics , really it's 440mm .The 500 mm is the circle uper and under platform where the arms are attached.

My motors are 400mm long. I made design as you think with the shaft not inside but outside but the diameter ( the same as descibe above) was bigger than 500mm , fast 800mm.

For me too big and as I don't want long arms also I decided to buil the design you can watch on last post.

This is my biggest challenge right now, how to place the motors in the most space efficient way.
I do not want to have that monster that has to stay in the garage.
I would like to be able to put it in my home office, so I can play often. :D
