where to apply force, from beneath or from rear of a seat

Here you can ask general questions about sim building, not related to the various hardware sections

where to apply force, from beneath or from rear of a seat

Postby ferslash » Tue 24. Jul 2012, 21:55

Hi guys:

I have seen two kinds of sims for race.

1. flex type, where the force is aplyed to the rear part of the seat

2. dery - sato design (i dont know the name) where force is applyes from beneath of the seat

considering a desing using wiper motors, is there a "better option" or both designs works just fine?

I expected motiondave to answer your question because he has a lot of experience with different setup types.

If I'm correct his findings where that shoulder mount with wipers is the best option, but I hope he can answer this himself.

I myself think good balance is more important than motor position at shoulder height or underneath.

It depends on the weight of the driver, if you are 90kg and under, at the back, just under the seat is fine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZOB2Qq_mS8 , get a good balance point. I found anyone heavier is too much weight in the motors.
Leverage is the best option. If you cannot extend the back, try at the front, like my foot motor sim, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2Y5kQyJ ... re=g-all-u (thanks to the badger), it uses leverage and will fit under a desk. Mind you , I am using big arse worm gear motors, but wipers will still help. With wipers, you may need to use springs to counteract balance. No I do not know what tension. I just guessed and it works.
Shoulder mount is overall the best, but other combinations I have tested also work...within reason.

When making shoulder mount, are the springs helpful for wiper motors in this case? Or are the springs necessary only when putting motors / force underneath the seat (rear or front)?

And if a driver is 90 kg or more, will the shoulder mount be the best solution for wipers?
