absolute beginners questions

Postby UncleDirt » Fri 3. Aug 2012, 16:19

Hey there,

because i´m complete at the start of building my own motion simulator i got some minor questions before i start to build.
In the last days i´ve read alot about the materia and made my own thoughts with it.
Finally my decision felt on a 2dof simforceGT design with wipermotors.
In consideration of the costs and capabilities it looks like a good choice for a first project.
Basic concept is to use my original Playseat as a base and build an substructure out of metal to move it.

Most questionmarks above my head popped up was when i readed about the electronics.
I found this wonderful description viewtopic.php?f=39&t=132
about thanos AMC Motion controller and first i was willing to build one on my own. But as i looked for gettin the parts here in germany i found that:
http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1376
http://www.watterott.com/de/Pololu-Simp ... ller-18v15
or maybe these
http://www.watterott.com/de/Pololu-Jrk-12v12

These are already complete assembled. Does this mean that, if i use 2 of them, i don´t need a controller like thanos one´s or the one from velleman any more? In the seond posted option there´s one feedback option described. Mm i wright when i think that i can directly mount the potis there? on the first posted option there´s no feedback option i think.
Can i directly use them with the x-sim software?

And theres another question. I´ve seen that most of the constructors of a simforce use a pivot or a u-joint from an driveshaft to mount their seatframes to the groundplate. How far is the angle the seat moves? I found one of these http://www.genoma.de/produkte/710212-ge ... engewinde/
and asked myself if 15 dedgrees from neutral to side are enough (30 degrees side by side)?

Hopefully you more experienced users and constructors can help.

kind regards

Maik

btw.: Don´t hesitate to answer me in german if you like. As you read above my english is rusted. Kinda horrible if you want so.
I´m just that type of a german who learned it in school years ago and had to be more attentive ;)

grate question my friend, and about it two comments:

1. your english is just fine, i am from mexico and i had no proble :D and by the way (i dont speak german, so, please keep writing english) :D

2. i had the same question and "motionDave" told me that a couple of pololu (of $99 usdlls) just do the job with absolutly no problems. and he also told me that even that they are a little expensive, the ivestment is grate! :D ( by the way i am about to buy them, but i have not idea about how to use them, i will buy them and then i will see how they work, but i was told that this is the simplest metod) :D

best regards from mex

AAAAh. The "first pay n try later"-method. Remembered me to my younger days :D . Sunked alot of money into real cars these former days. Sounds like it´s the same with car simulators^^ :D Surprisingly HOW realistic they are

I will help you setup the JRKS , just email me and I can advise once you have them.

Thanks in anticipation for that Dave. I will sure take you back on this in a while.

I was looking for a diy solution motion simulator for a while (back then the rock n ride was almost up to date.As I saw one of these many years ago i thought by my self that this was one of these things I MUST HAVE some day :D) but unfortunately i found no time for the last years to start seriously with my project.
Now that i´ve got the time, that was missing in the past years, i want to get it on.

First thing i´ll be building is the alumminum frame, then i´ll care about the electronics.
I have no final decison made about the actuation. First i wanted to use wipermotors, but since i have got a source for 230v Motors i am not sure any more. The only thing that kept me from taking these 220v motors is that i found no reverence of an electrical circuit or st. like this to use them so far. What i mean is how can i actuate 230v motors with the jrk´s ??? If theres a simple and cheap solution i would favor these 230v Motors above the Wipermotors i think. First i have to find that out.
If anyone still knows a solution how to actuate 230v motors as motion controllers please let me * Someone must have done this before.

Sincerly

Maik

So what sort of frame did you want then?
Are you going to put an existing frame on something for movements? Like a playseat on a pivot, wheel and pedals move with you?
Or are you looking at seat mover only?
As for pivot point, a uni joint should give up to 30 deg lean on one side I think. You may find depending on design and planned application (race or flight) that usually 15-20 deg is good for race, and more for flight. Unless you want to be tossed out of the seat.
I can custom cut a 2nd hand driveshaft to size and weld plated on the ends.
Also, if you are going to look at a basic frame, 12v motors will MORE than do the job. I use these big worm gear motors http://www.motiondynamics.com.au/worm-d ... orque.html and they can give this motion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbN8XF027lc , guys here have also used these winches http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online ... escription and got some wicked movement from them.
If you want to go 240v first up, then do so ;)

I think i´ll build a frame where the playseat fits on inflexible. Then build another frame as a substructure where the motors are fixed on and then make a movvable connection between these two fames via a pivot. The basic concept should be equal to Floriske.nl's 2DOF Playseat GT Wiper motor Project here: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=129 except that he uses wood for his structure.
He has a very nice concept, but since I´m a mechanic i prefer metal.

My frame should be out of a aluminim Material like Chris aka Schnullerbacke uses: http://www.sim-parts.com/?page_id=701.
Here´s his threat on the old Forum: http://www.*/forum/projekt ... t1217.html
One reason for that is the ability to adjust all parts on a belated substquent defect.

I slept over it and now i´ll get back to the basic 12v wipermotor concept for my first attempt to build a motion sim.
That seems to be the easier and more cheap solution. Thanks for your objections Dave. They´ve put me back to the ground and helped a lot.

But i will keep this thing in mind: viewtopic.php?f=60&t=242
If my first attempt to build a 2DOF with my Playseat works fine I WILL, someday build such a thing with 360 degree rotation.

tronicgr wrote:I remember them from the old * site. They were using the x-sim software but never shared their work on hardware, instead they went commercial.

And because of this everyone should be able to copy their concept with a clear conscience

I thought we all "copy" designs anyway...

Hmmm.. the electronics don´t get out of my head.

Is there no complete USB type DUAL motor controller with feedback on the market?
Like the jrk 12v12 but with the potential to actuate 2 motors with one card.

...questions, questions over questions. :?:
Sorry for that^^
