Stereoscopic (3D) Ride film motion simulator

Postby ebutt13 » Sun 18. Nov 2012, 22:13

Hi,

I recently designed a stereoscopic projection system for watching 3D films in my house.
The system is composed of a high-end PC with dual graphics card, 2 projectors with polarizing filters (the same kind used in IMAX cinemas) and a silver screen.

I've now decided to extend the system to include some form of a motion simulator so I can recreate a similar experience to that in a theme park (please note that I have no interest in using it for gaming; only watching ride films). I've also spoken to a representative from Iwerks who might be able to sell me some 3D ride films.

Could you guys point me in the right direction in terms of the kind of hardware and software I would need.
If I'm able to start this project, I'll regularly upload progress photos for the community.

Many Thanks,

Ed

Use dbox chairs, they have the biggest online database for motion. There is no free database for other solutions.

The problem with d-box chairs is that they have limited motion. I also intend to use it for specialised 3D ride films, not normal cinema released ones.

Thanks for your reply,

Ed

Bad motion, monthly payment and not inovative addons are dbox, but unfortionally they own the motion data ;)
We do not have motion data for movies but tools to make own motion to a video.
I do not think you are interested in making the motion for the videos?

I'm interested in making the motion for the movies as well as building the simulator myself.

Sounds good.
Is your plan big enough to get this videos including your motion legal online for the community or maybe buyable with some intro movies?

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the ride films for the community as well. They tend to offer very strict licenses.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by intro movies.

It does not make much sense if you do the work for you allone!
As Intro I mean short samples with motion. I think there are interrests in the community to get the films with motion also with a small payment.

Would it be possible that you take normal bluerays and another can buy this blueray and use your motion data?
(you must know the motion data is stored in a extern TXT in X-Sim)

It may be possible. I'll have to speak to the distributors.
Is X-Sim capable of playing ride films, or only games?

No, X-Sim can not playback dbox ride films or ride films from other distributors, they are all closed source.
We have this:
http://www.x-sim.de/manual/video_plugin.html
You can make your own motion with joystick or mouse.
You can import acceleration like you see in the picture, this acceleration could be from a data logger out of a car etc ...
