Finally starting a CKAS Type platform

Postby cthiggin » Sat 16. Mar 2013, 02:57

Hello folks,
AFTER two years of watching this and the "other first" forum, and a lot of research, I'm finally starting next weekend with buying the steel to start the fabrication. Me "thinks" I have that pretty well under control with the mechanical build - this will be a 3DOF with 1hp AC motors and Boston Gearheads, which I have, as well as the u-joint etc.
I have two questions for right now, "please".

1. I'm looking to use 1/2" id rod-ends and 1/2" links between the gearhead and upper platform....would this size be sufficient?

2. I have yet to find the type of material, steel or alum. for the actual arms from the gearhead shaft to the lower shaft link?

I know you folks are so kind to help newbies and I would highly appreciate any thoughts on the first two questions.
I will post photos and the build progresses.

Thanks so very much and have a blessed one.

Hello cthiggin,

I'm also new to building simulators. I have an other simulator design than yours, but I'll share my practice.
I use for my under construction simulator 12mm rod-ends and rods. So both the axial and the thread is 12mm. 12mm is almost exactly 1/2".
I use just steel in my setup.

wptm,
Thanks for your reply...with your information, then I'm on the right page with the ball ends and links @ 1/2".

On the motor links to the lower ball end, I've seen aluminum and steel being used. It looks like I will have to have those
machined as I don't have a way to get an 1 1/8" hole for the gear shaft.

Have a blessed one and stay in touch.
