need advice for 24v wheelchair motor build

Postby CorvairNut » Tue 23. Apr 2013, 07:20

Hi guys. I posted once before about my motors but now I'm ready to buy the parts and I'd like some good advice.

I have two wheelchair motors NPC-64038. These are 24 volt motors, 230 RPM, 1.6 hp. I was told the gearboxes are probably 33:1 ratio.

My motion platform build is underway and after a non-motion test today of the sound system and tactile transducers I'm excited and ready to buy parts. This build is for dual purpose flying and racing.

Keeping the cost down is a MAJOR concern as I have lots of things I want to do this summer with my money, so please keep that in mind! Please reply with recommendations on how to power these and what controllers to use! I want to do it right the first time.

Keep in mind my level of knowledge is super low, so I won't understand any special terminology and it will be easy for you guys to talk over my head. Also some direction on where to get my pots would be great too.

Thanks! I'm hoping to order my parts within the next 48 hours if you guys can give me enough info! I'll post pics as the project comes together.

Hi Ray
Have you had a look here: http://x-sim.de/software.php?lang=eng&p ... ct_gallery and maybe here?

Thanks for the replies guys. Ok so I'm pretty good on knowing some drivers I can use now and know I need an H bridge. May I ask why the polulu 24v12 isn't recommended? The UNO R3 looks like my pick based on the above info. I tend to avoid a setup that requires an additional workaround and it costs more to boot, can others agree that using the R3 controllers is a good way for me to go?

I know I' m asking some questions I should be able to figure out on my own but I'm absolutely slammed with work that needs to be done by May 10th in order to prepare for a car show and race event and I'm trying to squeeze in working on the motion platform at the same time. The result is I don't have a lot of time to spend sitting on the computer googling for hours on end like I normally would!

So you guys gave me enough to buy drivers, I can figure out pots, and I need an H-bridge. I also read that I should use a 24v battery in the system to handle power draw spikes is that right?

The big question that leaves is power supplies. I'm really trying to buy stuff that will work the first time without spending more than I need to. Can I get some power supply recommendations and maybe some more opinions on which drivers I should go with?

Thanks for all your patience and help!

Or to keep it cheap as possible I can recommend to you arduino + thanos-tronicgr diy h-bridge.
As far as I know it can handle 24volt also. However I've tried it only with normal wiper motors with 12 volts.
I've spent approximatelly two weeks, to build, test and repair my h-bridge. The parts for this h-bridge cost around 40$ (us).
I did the pcb etching also by myself, to keep costs low.

Before, I've ordered a cheap h-bridge from ebay, but went wrong on the first tests soon. After that I decided to build the h-bridge myself. Now I'm able to repair it for around 10$ if all the mosfets need to be replaced.

I'd get a used (not extremely wore out) truck (24v) battery for some dollars. Maybe you can find one in a junkyard. But you'll need then a charger also. Hopefully you have one, or you can borrow it. ;)
And yes, later you can invest into a proper power supply when you really need.

I also try to keep costs low, but already paid for some dead end solutions.

Server psu 12volt typical 50 to 75 amps, wire two in series for 24 volt, just read up on best ones, as you have to isolate -12 volt from ground on one.

cheap on ebay.

checkout RC models forum, http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1005309 on the easiest ones to mod and how to get them working

Hi Robbie

Yeah i'm using batteries in parallel,

with regard to mods on the server psu, that's why I gave a link to a thread where all the information on mods, also the best brands to isolate -12 volt, just on one supply to retain the earths on both power supplies. The Dell units i'm using require 2 captive nuts in the case drilled out, and replace with nylon nuts & bolts. 24 volt, 75 amp, £15.00 result.

For 12 volt use only requires a couple of logic level pins connected to work,

I would be more concerned with the sims that are using AC 3 phase motors, yes the motor may be earthed, but there's a lot of metal I've seen in vids without earth bonding.

Thanks for all the tips and links guys. I'll read that page and decide which PSU's to buy and wire them up as directed there. Building my own H-bridge sounds * but I'll read the instructions and decide on that also.

The 24V is a pain, but I'm really happy to have motors that should be overkill especially since my platform is heavier than I'd like.

Hi Bob and everybody,

My first simulator is based with sabertooth and vm110.As no one doesn't recommend vm110 I could test with this solution but if it brings anything ... i will spend time to test this solution.
What is interestning is that the kangaroo is cheap.
My first simulator : http://www.x-sim.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=254
My first simulator sleep in my house basement.
I will see !
Edit
Sorry .off topic , need to be placed in the topic for the kangaroo.

Would a plugin/driver be needed for Kangaroo to get recognized in X-Sim?
