Rkade's 2DOF first attempt

Postby RensLensvelt » Fri 27. Jul 2012, 09:44

Hello All,

I'm Rens from the Netherlands. I have my own gamestudio which develops games for the internet, tablets en phones. So you can say I'm intrested in gaming.
I had to sell my MX-5 racer last year and since then i've been looking for a new thrill. It seems a simulator looks like a great way to have some fun.

Stuff i've had lying around from other projects. Velleman K8055, two wheelchairmotors + Gearing, Racing Seats (BucketSeats) and a Sabertooth Motorcontroller (2x12).
So i've already got some of the more important parts.
Things i'm gonna need: The steeringwheel + pedals, a frame, and some gears.

I want a +45 -45 degrees for both longitudinal and lateral forces.
Below is my design for * I know I miss some crossmembers. But it's a start to see if All the angles are possible.

It's made up from 3 different frames.
The blue frame is the base.
The green frame is for lateral forces
The Red frame is for longitudinal forces
The grey blops are the engines i've got
The yellow discs are the gears/sprockets i'm going to use.

The output shaft of my gearbox (1:25 160rpm engine) rotate with 38,4 degrees a second. I hope this is fast enough for a thrillride.

I've bought a nice 2nd hand G25 steeringwheel.

Hi rens,

Good to see your project here!

Your initial design looks good, but what a massive angle you are looking for :D Since you are aiming for 45 degrees I reckon you are going to use it for flight sims as well?

Looking forward to seeing your progress!

45 deg race...that could be interesting. It would be like driving a wheelstander at the drag races

45 degrees sounds like a lot. But when you remember that the horizon stays the same (your monitor moves with you) you will only experience it as G-forces putting you in the back of your seat, or when braking giving you the falling sensation.

Besides, you've always have to reach for the stars! and in this case its litarally :D

Zo i've just order my own Oculus.
A new kind of VR-glasses. I'm gonna try to make them work with unity for now, with my own racing game. Which i hope will work with my cockpit.
It would be the best ever! Then you could look around inside of the car.

The Oculus
Technical specs of the Dev Kit (subject to change)
Head tracking: 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) ultra low latency
Field of view: 110 degrees diagonal / 90 degrees horizontal
Resolution: 1280x800 (640x800 per eye)
Inputs: DVI/HDMI and USB
Platforms: PC and mobile
Weight: ~0.22 kilograms

That's a nice new "toy" ;)

Seen an article about it on tweakers.net yesterday, looks promising!

Any idea on when the first dev kits will be ready yet?

Btw, are you sure you are going to use the k8055? I know it's an easily available board but the motion I've seen of it so far isn't really great :( a bit more arcade like instead of accurate.

I'd advise jrk's or thanos amc 1.6 instead

Hi RensLensvelt, I am also developing my version 2DOF, and my idea of movement is very similar to yours. I'm thinking of moving the platform in 35 º - 40 º, also share the feeling of movement must magnify hehehe.

About Oculus rift seems very interesting, unknown in developing this article. I have read the information and I may also buy a kit "EARLY RIFT DEVELOPER KIT + DOOM 3 BFG", seems a fantastic gadget.

Greetings and I will continue your progress on your platform

One possible downside that was posted on another forum yesterday (pCars), wearing the Oculus headset you can't see the steering wheel. For those that have a good selection of buttons etc. that could be a problem.

@Florisk
The first will be deliverd in December of this year.
I've got an K8055 laying around. So yes... it's better then buying a new board.

@Roadster2
I try not to look too many times at the steering wheel. During the race I only need the wheel and shifter, and those i can find blind.

@Eldeejay
I've been redesigning, redesigning and again redesigning... It's all about materials and cost and offcourse looks...

The only thing you have to think about is that the Oculus has 6dof, so when your rig move, the camera moves. And When your full throttle 45 degrees backwards, you don't want the Oclus thinking you're looking up. So you need and adjusment between Oculus and the Degrees of the rig.

Whoa! I'm also planning to use the Oculus Rift with my motion platform and I hadn't thought about this very serious issue! I was thinking like a TrackIR pro and mount the sensor to the moving frame so it stays relative, but the OR I guess has no "camera" I can mount that way and that is a serious problem!
