TrackIR home made can you do?

Postby kevin123 » Fri 19. Jul 2013, 21:02

Hello guys

I found this guide to build a TrackIR with a webcam that only the video tutorial and English and as usual do not understand anything. cheaply by buying 4 LEDs and 4 resistors around 30 € and free software, and you download from here http://www.free-track.net/english/
Assuming that buying a TrackIR original cost us between 140/150 € in my opinion is worth groped ;)

Here's a video demonstration of what we can do!

In this tutorial there is another one that shows us how to build the web cam suitable for TrackIR changing a cam from a few dollars with a floppy disk.

I ask anyone interested in the subject if he can do the job and after he explains step by step how to do it would be a good thing ;)

I also tried this program but I do not work well stutters if you want you can try the download from here http://nipg.inf.elte.hu/headmouse/headmouse.html I tried it with gtr2 but honestly I do not like :?

TUTORIAL

Obtain the following materials:

- 4 electrical resistors of value "100Ohm"
- A webcam with a refresh rate of 30FPS
- 4 infrared LEDs (or red), recommended the SFH485P / SFH485P2
- A heat-shrink tubing or insulating tape
- A solid wire rod in full (minimum diameter 0.25cm)
- A USB extension cable
- A soldering iron, and of course the pond
- A hat with a visor

USB CABLE:
MATERIAL: USB cable.

Cut from the part of the female jack cable, and sguainatelo up to go back to the four wires of distinct color that there are inside, covered by the cover to shield the cable in question.
The USB cable has 2 wires for the logical interface (everything related to the interaction and exchange of data between the connected device and the PC) and 2 others that provide power.
We are interested in only the feeding part, consisting of the respective color RED 2 cables (positive) and BLACK (negative). Unsheathed cable for 2cm.
NB Remember that it is essential to isolate the cables, so as to avoid any unpleasant contacts are not very welcome to the PC.

CIRCUIT:
MATERIAL: Power cable - 4 Resistors 100Ohm - 4 IR LEDs - soldering tin.

Using the welder and the material listed above:
Pay particular attention to the polarity of the IR LEDs (the longer rod is the positive, the shorter the negative) and rebuilt the circuit by referring to the following scheme: http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/5148/ circuitokl3.th.png

NB For the construction of the circuit, of course, take as baseline measures that the hat or the surface to which you have decided to award aims to support such a system.

PS: Finished the circuit, connect the poles of the latter to those of the USB cable, so that the system turns on only when connected to the computer.

ASSEMBLY OF THE SYSTEM:
MATERIAL: circuit built - Hat or surface used for this purpose.

Attach the circuit to the hat so crare a "T" on the contrary that for extremes has 4 IR LEDs. Pay attention to the top or to the surface you have chosen to use, because they are not obscured the LED turning his head to the right, the left, rather than up or down.

Thanks
Kevin

Hi,
without reading your Post i startet this project. Just out offen one LED out of an old remote control and one battery just taped on my headset. I use the internal webcam from my Laptop prepaed with the red plastic from the remote control.
It was hard to get it run with dirt3. But now it woks well. But i think i'll uptade to 3 LEDs soon.

That looks very interesting. Worth having a play around when I get the chance.

Just did a quick google and found some similar software that may be worth comparing? Haven't tried any myself - downloading facetrack *

http://facetracknoir.sourceforge.net/information_links/download.htm Tracks face
http://www.cachya.com/esight/overview.php Tracks a sign/image on your hat/head
http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/ Commercial product?

Hi Tombo

Already that someone is working and already a good thing and as I understand you're also a good point! I hope you finish it with the 3 LEDs and after If you really want you can share your work with the community would be a welcome thing because it continues this way ;)

Hi RufusDufus

One of those software that you reported it works with normal webcam without IR LEDs and are able to test for a couple of hours with the software facetracknoir GTR2 and I must say it works better than HeadMouse has more settings just that I have a better understanding of how to work with DIRT 2 and 3 because I could not get it to work ....and still too early to make a judgment I need more time to test it

I will give a look also at cachya and NaturalPoint ;)

thanks for pointing that

EDIT:Oh I forgot ... I also installed for xbox360 kinect today and works to control with gestures windows 7 I hope you find something to make it work as TrackIR

The best way to see the infra red leds is to use a wii mote connected via Bluetooth to your pc. The wiimote only tracks the leds.

It is about how I could read around the wiimote is fine though, and the same thing to establish itself (for those who do not have a wiimote) a webcam infrared as in the first post.
However sabbe ideal post a guide for the wiimote so owners and interested in the topic will be happy ;)

Instead, for xbox360 kinect owners will give you good news .. I managed to get it to work while with the other giochi.E GTR2 then I will think a little laborious but in the end you will find the settings right ... I'm there yet but I must say lavoranto that works.

The only thing that I'm testing without moving the sim with the kinect still on the desk ... I think when you use the sim on the move will be a mess .... :D

Hi,
today i tried it with an external webcam.
My experiences are:
Filter with an old colour Film works and ir LED works good. But i should really change to a 3led Setup, because when the sun US shining trough the window at the white wall it is Not recognized. So for 1led Setup the room must be very. dark.

Although with this cam there is a lag ingame. maybe just a setting in the perferences Ort it's fps rate is to low. I'll try again next days

Hi,
I'm sure you'll do a great job at the end! To me instead and down with a webcam or with the kinect if I have little light FaceTrackNoIR does not recognize the face and does not work ... I need more time to set up good software.
