Possible to run multiple shakers independently?

Postby MoparMap » Mon 6. Jun 2016, 15:13

As the title suggests, I'd like to run multiple tactile transducers in different locations, so I'd like independent control of each. Is this possible within the XSim toolset? For example, to start with I was planning to get 2 shakers. One would be placed on the bottom of my seat and the other on the back. I'd like to set one to vibrate with vertical forces like kerbs, road surface, etc. on racing games, and the one mounted on the seat back to vibrate with fore-aft output like gear changes, horizontal forces (like hitting a wall head on or being bumped from behind). As far as I can tell it seems like you only get a single output, but I haven't dug too deep yet. Effectively I would think it would be just like setting up two axes for each shaker (a frequency and volume axis for each one, so 4 total). Then I would assign vertical events to the one set of axes and horizontal effects to the other, but I don't seem any particular channel control, nor do I see any kind of "port output" option for which port of my sound card to use. Is this possible within XSim at this time?

Okay, looks like there is/was some work on it I found in a previous post, but no real info from there other than it was possible at some point (viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2402). Can anyone offer a little more info on how you go about doing it? The post talks about an old plugin, but where would I find it? I have read the other tutorials and can follow along with the current built in bass shaker feature in the XSim I just downloaded last night, but don't see any options for multi-channel.

As told in the other thread this plugin is old and did not leave beta because noone do have so much shakers. You do also not have so much. Additionally there is no plan about the usage of the 8 channel plugin. Only two or three games offer some effects for this. Or recalculated stuff.

That's the main thing though, I don't really need 8 full channels necessarily, but there are three primary directions that forces come from, so having at least 3 channels of support would be nice. In the case of car racing at least you'll see all three pretty consistently. You have verticals with road surface, front to back with striking things head on or being hit from behind, and side to side from someone hitting you from the side or hitting a wall with the side of a car. Would be nice to be able to better isolate those forces. Just about any mid range motherboard comes with 5.1 audio anymore, so most computers have 6 channels available to begin with, even without having to add another sound card (granted I understand the limitation of having to dedicate one card to audio and another to sound). Just about any secondary card you buy is going to have more than 2 channels as well. Just seems odd that it's limited to only a single channel.
