How much do all the bits cost?

Postby Richie77 » Sun 11. May 2014, 06:41

Hi all,

I am very new to sim racing and have been using a static setup that I knocked up myself, not great but got me started.

I would really love a motion sim but I nearly passed out when I saw the prices!

I think the only way forward is me building one myself and I was hoping for some advice.

There seems to be several different types, actuators, windscreen motors, pneumatic etc but I have no idea which is the best?
I saw a clip on YouTube with a guy who made what looks to be a great sim out of PVC pipe. There was a link to the design but it’s not working.

I may be being a bit ambitious but I would like to find out roughly how much all the bits would cost?
Wheel, pedals, 3 X monitor, PC, seat, software, basically a ballpark figure so I can decide if it’s even worth pursuing this idea.
I'm mainly into F1 but would like a setup that could suit all racing if that's even possible?

I can build just about anything given enough time (I'm a designer) so it's all about the component cost for me.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Regards

Richard

Hello Richard!

To give you a rough price: around 3000 €

- Triple screen gamer PC 2100€
- 2DOF arduino motomonster 800€
- Wheel from 200€
= much FUN!

Thanks Mat,

What about 6DOF?

This SCN5 racing seat project:
viewtopic.php?t=390
1300€ without monitor, without PC, without wheel but with SCN5+tax+delivery included in the sum. Can be ~300€ less if you buy mass sets of metal parts from internet and not from the local distributor.
700€ less if you use wiper motors instead of SCN5.
I did collect the bills to get this sum, it is not a assumption.

There are various solutions for 6DOF, with "just the platform" material cost from $4500 to $6000, if you need something really strong using AC motors.

Otherwise, if you are handy, you can build your own linear actuators with DC motors like here:

Btw, the guy on the video with the PVC pipe racing simulator is me a few years back

Thanks

Hi Thanos,

Thank you for the advice.

Thats so cool that you are the guy in the video!

I'll have a look at the links, just hope I understand it all because so far I haven't a clue what I'm looking at.

Thanks again

It still based on physics and centrifugal force.
