Going from one DOF type to another

Postby Haplo » Sun 19. Oct 2014, 21:43

Hi all,

Very new to the whole motion simulator area but as a newbie I would like to start small and go from there.
The question is if I go for e.g. a 2DOF sim in the beginning, can the equipment be reused later for e.g. a 6DOF setup?
If not would it be too much for a newbie to start for a 6DOF sim rather than a 2DOF.
E.g. starting with a model 6DOF and then scale the concept to a real 6DOF setup?
Kind of a "learning to walk before you fly" type of question :)

Also is there a "complete" shopping list somewhere?
I see bits and pieces and references but as far as I've seen not a, "this is what you need".

Thanks.

Hi Haplo,

There is no complete list as in this DIY community everyones uses whatever is easily available near him in local vendors. Also weight needs varies and the results although usually end up in same quality of motion, they not look alike in terms of parts being used.

You can start with scale model 6DOF first, get comfortable with the electronics and the software, then plan for real size platform.

What weight (load) do you plan to use for your platform?
What speed of disposition (heave, surge, sway) and angle rotation (pitch, bank, yaw) do you need?

Thanks

Hi Thanos,

As pretty new to motion simulators it would be more of a question on what would be typical?
If there is such a thing as typical :)
In terms of load it would need to handle 130-150kg if including seat, screens etc.
Not sure though if that needs to be increased due to dynamic loads and extra structural integrity for stability and safety.

Wouldn't be that great to fall off the thing :D

The most typical design you can do is Fabians: http://6dofabi.blogspot.co.uk
-For loads 250kg to 300kg.
-High speed, lots of travel
-Works good for both Car and Flight simulation.

Another one is Vicpopo's: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=1347
-loads 150KG to 250Kg
-limited travel
-compact design
-designed for Car simulation.

Vulbas (Seb): http://www.racingfr.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=32002
-high speed, disposition,
-for loads: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GwyW5ZikJc
-I've seen it only with Car simulation so far.

And then there are others too 8-)
